About Me
Writer/Artist/Class Clown
My name is April, after April Dancer, the Girl from U.N.C.L.E. It was my Mom’s favorite television show when she was a kid; she imagined I’d turn into a beautiful red-headed spy. I did get the red-headed part right, but I don’t think my freckles and goofy laugh were a part of her plan. When I was growing up, my family moved a lot, and I had to morph from awkward and shy to class clown in order to survive. As a result, my sense of humor is “stuck” in the sixth grade. For instance, I think when someone laughs and milk comes out of their nose, that’s funny. When someone falls down, it’s funny. If they turn out to be hurt, then I’m a big jerk, but regardless, I’m cracking up.
I love the unlovable creatures of the world—spiders and rats and ravens, oh my. The first thing I do when I enter a pool is save all the struggling bugs. I also have no problem with invading others’ personal space, laughing loudly, giving hugs and tucking strangers’ tags back into their collars. Ventriloquists and mimes freak me out, but strangely I’m okay with clowns. Maybe it’s because I understand their love of lipstick. While in graduate school I began writing for children (and oh, it was a horrid story, too…I’m planning to use it someday as one of those post-mortem, “we found this manuscript in her cupboard” kind of joke).
My SuperPowers are parallel parking (it’s all in the wrist), and remembering old song lyrics. Maybe I should change that to Useless SuperPowers. A future filled with jet packs is my prediction, and I’ll be the first in line for one.
I've also gone by April Gaff (married name) and April Ridgeway (adopted name). Please see my page at JacketFlap.
